Cheshire Ethiopia provides center based services in its Menagesha,Dire Dawa ,Hawassa and Addis Ababa Rehabilitation centers.CE-Menagesha and CE-Dire Dawa admit 140 clients at a time ,i.e. 120 and 20 respectively. Menagesha rehabilitation Center is a national rehabilitation and referral center for rehabilitation of Persons with disabilities mainly children aged 5-18 years affected due to post-polio paralysis. The children wing admits 70 clients at a time making the annual intake being over 140 children With the exception of those serious cases who stay more than a year despite of the average length of stay four to six months. The comprehensive pre and post-operative care along with physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, donkey assisted therapy, handicraft training, informal and functional education, life skills training, counseling, mobility and walking appliances fitting and other therapeutic services enhance mobility and social functioning of children under rehabilitation
The pre and post-operative care provided in Menagesha Rehabilitation in partnership with Facing Africa and Project Harar, both Uk based Charities serve 100 Noma and Cleft Palate annually. Noma (cancrum oris) is an acute and ravaging gangrenous infection affecting the face. The victims of these diseases are mainly children under the age of 6, caught in a vicious circle of extreme poverty and chronic malnutrition.
The organization has full-fledged prosthetic orthotic workshop that produce artificial limbs for amputees and mobility devices such as walking frame, crutches, braces, orthopedic shoes and tricycles. The organization has recently started assembling wheelchair which is the first of its kind in the country.
The prosthetic orthotic workshops in the mentioned centers produce and provide upper and lower limb prosthesis for amputees and those in need of walking and mobility aids such as walking frame, crutches, braces, orthopedic shoes and tricycles. New and old clients amputated because of different reasons mainly adults are also admitted for a short period and provided services as needed .The centers also provide repair and maintenance services to a large number of clients on regular and outpatient service basis
CE has recently started assembling improved wheelchairs in its centers mainly at Menagesha Rehabilitation Center. The wheelchairs are fitted as per the WHO service guideline for enhancing the personal mobility of people with disabilities. The wheelchair the design, production, supply and service delivery of manual wheelchairs, in particular for long-term wheelchair users. Training has also be given to all Rehabilitation professionals of the country. In addition to basic and Intermediate wheelchair service training conducted to physiotherapy students of Gondar University. A wheelchair lab has been established in the premises of the university.
The Reed Rehabilitation in Addis Ababa serves as a referral point for children with developmental impairments referred from hospitals and CBR programs. Children mainly affected by cerebral palsy are provided with exercise therapy, provision of appliances. Parents are also provided training aimed to get knowledge and skill on rehabilitation of their children.
