Strengthening eye care services in the regions of Addis Ababa, Oromia, SNNP and Amhara in Ethiopia

SDL and CBMco-operate with Cheshire Ethiopia (CE)in line with the BMZ-funded project “Strengthening ophthalmic care in the regions of Addis Ababa, Oromia, SNNP and Amhara in Ethiopia

Objective project : Through strengthening the capacity of primary health care providers and establishing an eye health referral system, a sustainable eye health service delivery system is established in the regions.

In the catchment area of the rehabilitation centers managed by Chesire Ethiopia, access to quality eye health care is strengthened. By equipping the Menagesha Rehabilitation Center’s eye department with ophthalmic equipment, setting up an optical workshop, and training medical professionals, they are empowered to provide quality eye health services and regularly monitor the quality of the cataract surgeries they perform.

Community-based health workers and school personnel are empowered to conduct eye health screenings in schools and refer students with eye problems to appropriate health services for treatment. By conducting eye health outreaches and awareness campaigns in remote communities, the population is sensitized on eye health and receive treatment when needed. By strengthening the capacity of primary health care providers and establishing an eye health referral system, a sustainable eye health service delivery system is created in the regions.
